Papineau reels 'em in with TV showFRANK PAPINEAU'S tickled pink
about his second season
as The Weekend FishermanTM[Taken from The Ottawa Sun -- Don Wilcox' Outdoor Column] Frank Papineau's weekly television show, which he produces in co-operation with Rogers Cable, has returned to the air this fall with 13 new episodes. The Ottawa angler just finished taping his final show of the season at the BASS wrap up tournament on the Rideau River, and did so in spectacular style.
Papineau and Ron Summers, his best friend for about 25 years, won the event with a five-fish limit of 14.7 pounds. And they did it by catching smallmouth, which have schooled up for their annual fall feeding frenzy.
Papineau calls that his personal highlight of the year, but viewers might also like a couple of shows taped along James Bay, which he calls the Weekeitd Fishernian's Great Adventure. Invited to the area by local Crees who are hoping to boost tourism, Papineau said the fishing for speckles in the Roggan River was unparalleled. Fish ranged up to six pounds.
During the trip, he and native guides fished several species, flying in to remote locations by plane and helicopter.
"That was incredible," he said. "I had never flown in a chopper before, and I'd never flown in a float plane."
His shows run the gamut of species, and most were taped locally. One other field trip was for kink salmon on Lake Ontario near Port Hope, during which Papineau was accompanied by a child with Cystic Fibrosis. Together, they hauled in a 30-pound chinook.
In addition to the fishing is a tackle giveaway for viewers. a segment entitled The Good Old Days, featuring old tackle and techniques, and lots of what Papineau calls "good entertainment."
"If it was just fishing, I wouldn't want to do it," he said. "This is all about fun and entertainment."
The Weekend Fisherman airs Tuesdays at 7 p.m., and again Saturday at 10 a.m., on Cable 22.
